An endocrine gland situated in the base of the neck area. The thyroid gland is concerned with regulation of the metabolic rate by the secretion of thyroid hormone. This requires trace amounts of iodine. When the thyroid is in a state of imbalance, it is usually hypoactive. When underactive, the pituitary is usually overactive. The reverse applies when the thyroid is hyperactive; the pituitary is under active. Women generally seem to have more of a tendency to have underactive thyroid conditions while men have the opposite tendency. The thyroid plays a part in mental disorders and weight building. It is also affected by stress and emotions. There is a very simple test you can do to find out whether your thyroid is underactive or overactive. All that is needed is an oral thermometer (non digital). The normal temperature we are looking for is 97.8 F or 36.5 C. Shake the thermometer down before going to bed at night and place it close to the bed so it can be easily reached. First thing in the morning before getting out of bed, take the thermometer and place it under your armpit and leave it there for ten minutes while you lie very quiet. This should be done for three mornings in a row. If the temperature is below the figures given (that is below 97.8 F or 36.5 C), then your thyroid is considered to be underactive. Certain herbs can be used to help to bring this gland back into balance.
